Creating content for a digital audience can be challenging. Every single day, hundreds of articles are written, and you only have seconds to get a reader’s attention before they move on. Utilizing digital assets effectively is crucial to capturing and engaging your audience.

Below you will find my top five writing tips to assist you in your blogging endeavors.

1. Begin strong

The headline of your article is the first thing that people see, so it needs to be engaging. Your headline should give a glimpse at the story you have written, while not click-baiting the audience. It is important that the headline utilizes SEO elements so it can be easily found.

Keyword research can assist in ensuring your articles are search engine friendly.

2. Be interactive and accessible

It is advised to utilize multimedia elements within your posts by including photos, videos, audio pieces, or data to accompany the writing. Not only will this help to break up the article, but it will also allow more interaction within the pieces and strengthen the connection to it. There should also be an easy way for readers to interact — whether that is through a comment box or links to share on social media.

3. Proper grammar is a must

Some writers choose to break grammar rules to achieve a specific style that fits their content, however, that is not the same as publishing pieces that are unedited and sloppy. You can utilize a platform like Grammarly to check your work for basic mistakes within your writing.

If you have a WordPress website, use the Yoast SEO plugin to get a readability score for each blog post you write.

4. Get to the point

Despite being necessary for academic pieces, large walls of text are the enemy in an online market. Use paragraph breaks and subheadings in your blog posts to make them easier for a reader to scan.

Although the internet seemingly has unlimited space, it’s important to learn how to write short.

5. Let your personality shine through

When writing online it is important to create a connection with your audience. Your voices and tone will make or break that connection. Use the language that you are comfortable with but be wary of jargon that could confuse the audience.

It is okay to have fun with writing, just make sure you edit your work and consider your audience.
